Putin authorized the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine Bangladesh Diplomat

President Vladimir Putin has authorized Russian forces to use nuclear weapons in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. It was the first time such a decision had been taken by him in the nearly three-year conflict.

Russia-Ukraine marks 1,000th day of war on Tuesday. Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman and press secretary of the Russian President's office, Kremlin, told reporters that he signed a decree on this today.

The new decree states that if a third country or party provides such destructive weapons to countries that do not have nuclear weapons, Russia can use nuclear weapons against those countries.

“If an aggressor country with nuclear weapons joins forces with an aggressor country that does not have nuclear weapons, it becomes not a single attack, but a joint attack,” Peskov said at a briefing at the Kremlin office in Moscow on Tuesday.

“And in such a situation, we have taken the steps that should be taken keeping our principles intact.”

Peskov added, “Russia has always been against the use of nuclear weapons; We are forced to take this decision only to protect our security, sovereignty and integrity.”

Last Sunday, the outgoing President of the United States, Joe Biden, gave permission to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, to attack inside Russia. Within two days of this permission, Putin signed a decree on the use of nuclear weapons.

According to political analysts, Putin issued the new decree in response to Joe Biden's permission. Peskov also hinted at the Kremlin press conference.

Russian forces launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, which is still ongoing, after years of tension over not recognizing the Crimean peninsula as Russian territory and lobbying for membership in the US-led military alliance NATO. President Putin himself ordered the operation. Millions of military-civilian people on both sides have been killed in this campaign in about three years.

Moscow has repeatedly signaled in 2023 that Russian forces will end military operations in Ukraine if Kiev enters peace talks; But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made it clear that Kiev will not enter into any dialogue with the Putin-led administration. He has also issued a presidential decree in this regard. Sources: AFP, NDTV World
