Reason Passenger Always Dresses Up to Go to the Airport Goes Viral

Airports are often shown on the silver screen as the breeding ground for meet-cutes, and while in real life most of us move through security to our gates in a disheveled state, one woman has gone viral for highlighting the romantic potential of airport terminals.

Sarah Ott, known online as @thesarahott, decided to elevate her airport attire and her approach to spending time at terminals after learning how her parents met. On Instagram, Ott recently posted a video of herself sitting in an airport, dressed immaculately while sipping coffee.

Her post, which has garnered widespread attention, detailed how her parents’ story inspired her to dress well while traveling.

“My love of travel is most definitely influenced by my parents,” Ott, a marketing manager in Vancouver, Canada, told Newsweek. “One day, I thought I would share a bit of their story and how I dress up to go to airports because my parents met at one.”

She added: “My mum had spent a year in Germany studying and so recognized my very German father’s accent and went over to introduce herself. As one of them was staying and the other leaving the airport, they exchanged information and ended up writing letters to each other for two years before getting married.”

A few years ago, Ott backpacked across Europe, meticulously documenting her travels. Her social media series, where she crossed off countries and showcased prominent landmarks, quickly attracted a community of travel enthusiasts. The content creator now has more than 18,000 followers on Instagram.

“A fun fact about me is I always dress up to go to the airport because that’s where my parents met,” Ott wrote in the post, which has been liked more than 15,900 times. In the video’s caption, she offered a more detailed account of her parents’ serendipitous encounter.

“I remember when my mom first told me the story of how her and my dad met and I still think it’s the most romantic thing in the world,” Ott wrote.

She recounted how her mother, then a teacher, and her father, a cameraman, happened to be in a tiny, remote airport in northern Canada. Their paths crossed by chance while one was arriving as the other was departing.

The connection sparked when her mother, who had studied abroad in Germany for a year, heard her father speaking German and confidently approached him. They chatted, exchanged contact information and committed to keep in touch.

“When used correctly, social media can be a place to connect us from near and far,” Ott said. “The comment section of the post is filled with similar love stories of meet-cutes in airports, roadsides, and even warehouses.”

“It also stirred up conversations around how we present ourselves and whether attraction is at all connected to our attire,” she continued.

Indeed, her romantic and nostalgic gesture sparked discussion about personal style and its effect on potential attractions.

“This is the third reel I’ve seen about dressing better in the airport,” one viewer said. “My Instagram algorithm is trying to tell me something.”

“This is my dream love story,” another added.

“Love this! My parents met on an airplane! My dad was flying and my mom was his flight attendant,” a commenter said.

Another wrote: “Same! No matter what I always try to look nice.”

“They can see me as a mess first,” one user commented. “That’ll be my regular anyway sweatpants and a crop top is my comfort zone.”

Ott added: “I love love and had no idea sharing a small clip of my parents’ love story would garner such a beautiful response.”
