Rooppur NPP Unit-II: Delivery of critical equipment completed

An equipment 'transport lock' required for the second unit has reached the Rooppur Nuclear Power Project site in Pabna. It is a part of the unit's fuel handling system. The installation work in the reactor building will start soon.

Russia's state atomic energy agency Rosatom announced this information in a press release on Saturday (August 24).

This critical equipment of the reactor compartment is cylindrical in shape, weighing 235 tons, 12.7 meters in length and 10 meters in diameter. One of its functions is to ensure the prevention of release of radioactive material from the containment and at the same time to prevent fire. The equipment is required for loading new fuel and unloading used fuel, apart from transporting it to the maintenance level of the reactor plant for repairing various materials during power plant operation.

Alexey Deiri, Vice-President (Bangladesh Projects) of EtamstroyExport said, “The implementation process of the two units of Ruppur NPP such as equipment supply and installation, startup and adjustment work is progressing at a normal pace. In the current scenario, we can say with certainty that Rosatom is fulfilling its commitment to Bangladesh properly and guaranteeing the reliability, safety of its technology for the benefit of the people of the country and the future generations”.

Bangladesh's first nuclear power plant is being built at Rooppur with the financial and technical support of Russia. The two-unit plant will have a total generating capacity of 2,400 MW. The first unit is getting ready for startup. The power plant uses state-of-the-art Russian 3+ generation VVER 1200 reactors. which is capable of meeting all international security requirements. The lifespan of Ruppur nuclear power plant is estimated to be 60 years, but if necessary, it can be extended by another 20 years. The power plant will play a special role in providing uninterrupted quality power to the country and maintaining peak load. The general contractor for the project is the Engineering Department of Russia's state atomic energy agency Rosatom.
