Sheikh Hasina's fall from that meeting of the army!


Army Chief General Waqar-Uz-Zaman exchanged views with various levels of military officers at the army headquarters on August 3 to assess the situation of the movement and take feedback after deploying the army nationwide to control the movement demanding quota reform.
Officials of other formations of the country were also involved in the exchange meeting virtually. During the discussion, many expressed that any negative role in suppressing this movement would bring bad name for the army.
The army chief realized the attitude of the military officers and decided that the army would not fire on the agitators under any provocation. Not only that, the army personnel will not resist or obstruct the march of the students.
During the procession, the soldiers would rather move and make room. When this news spread around, the movement took a turn. The pot changes very quickly.
During the day's meeting, Chief of Army Staff General Waqar-uz-Zaman gave an opening speech of about half an hour, in which he explained why the army was deployed with the help of the civil administration as per the directives of the government.
He said, if the government deploys the army to deal with the crisis, then they are bound to obey that order. However, he added, his troops did not kill anyone. He also presented the statistics of how many bullets and blank shots were fired to control the situation.
Advising the officers to be restrained, the army chief said, there has never been such a mass protest in our country after 1970. So this is an exceptional case. We all need to be patient.
After the speech, the army chief invited officers of various ranks to share their practical experience. The Brigadier General and a few senior officers raised their hands but the army chief discouraged them and insisted on listening to the younger officers.
On that day, 6 to 7 officers shared their practical experience.
A woman army officer from Rajshahi read out an emotional speech in Bengali saying that all the mothers of the country have been touched by death and all the mothers are crying.
He was a neighbor of Mir Mochadar, who was killed while distributing water to the agitators in Dhaka's Uttara.
Women's officer Major Hajera Jahan emphasized on the loss of children's lives and justice in this incident. He expressed concern over the growing public dissatisfaction with the army in the prevailing situation. The army chief agreed with him.
A shooting incident in Dhaka's Mohammadpur went viral on social media. A captain involved in the incident described how army personnel on duty were surrounded by mobs and had to fire for their own safety.
He said, “I faced criticism from my own family members, from my friends and from my loved ones. They watched the video. I faced a depressing situation after criticism from my close relatives.
Mid break is given at 2.40 pm. More officials were expected to speak after the break.
Lt. Col. Mahbub, commanding officer of 5 Air Defense Regiment, advised the soldiers to withdraw to their barracks, pointing out that public support for the army had declined. Another official from Chittagong suggested working to restore the image of the army by helping injured students.
At the end, General Waqar-uz-Zaman highlighted the social pressures he was facing and quoted a song by Ayub Bachchu to express his frustration.
When the meeting resumed after a break, the army chief made a few remarks and ended the meeting with a final order to 'not shoot', echoing the words of the young officers. The meeting ended with young army officers venting their anger.
Besides, on August 4, another important incident took place in Rawa Club. On that day, retired army officers expressed solidarity with the anti-discrimination student movement. This news quickly spread across the country. It also carried an important message to the members of all ranks serving in the army that day to stand by the country and the people. Sheikh Hasina could not be happy with the decision that the army will not fire on the protesters.
He wanted the police as well as the army personnel to do whatever was necessary to suppress the movement. It would have resulted in more bleeding; Considering this, the army chief met Sheikh Hasina and told them about their impossibility. This is how the army turned away from Sheikh Hasina and her government that day.
