The price of jute chalk is increasing in Narail. Even five or six years ago, silver sticks with golden scales were neglected and disrespected on the village paths or in the corners of the courtyards. Generally, people used jute sticks for cooking in earthen ovens and making canopies for drinking water. Currently, its demand has increased in various works. Paved roads, fields and ghats wherever the eye can see, jute drying and maintenance work is going on. However, the value of jute wood has increased commercially with gold fiber and silver sticks. Farmers of this district are getting more profit by selling jute along with jute sand.
Farmers of different areas of the district said that after drying the jute in the sun, traders buy it from their homes. They take this jute to different parts of the country. Some sell in vans. Jute farmers are benefiting as the demand for jute chalk is increasing and its price is also good. They can cover the cost of jute cultivation by selling jute.
Prabir Kumar Das, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer of Lohagara Upazila, said that jute has been planted on 12 thousand 165 hectares of land in the upazila this year. About 15 thousand rupees worth of jute sticks are available from jute produced in 1 hectare of land.
Due to shortage of water in Lohagarh, the farmers are facing problems in raising the jute produced. But because the color of jute is not good, it has to be sold at a slightly lower price. Farmers are trying to recoup some of that loss with golden sticks. Now the jute care and shopping work is going on. Traders come from far and wide to buy silver rods.
Abul Kalam Azad, a farmer of Lahuria village, said that our income has increased by selling jute. Many traders from Rajshahi, Barisal, Pirojpur are coming to different villages of the upazila to buy jute sticks. This year, many traders came and told the price of 100 knots of jute sticks from 200 to 300 taka, but we did not sell them.
Fariduzzaman, a jute trader in Rajshahi, said that the demand for jute in Rajshahi is very high. So every year we come to this upazila to buy jute as jute is available here at a low price.
Lohagra upazila agriculture officer agriculturist Farzana Akhter said that besides jute, the demand for jute wood has also increased in Lohagra. Various types of articles are being made with jute. Office equipment is also being made from jute. The economic value has also been almost equal.
