Six and a half million people are stuck in water


Flooding in Sylhet is taking a terrible form due to the torrential downpour and continuous rain coming down from India. Floods have occurred in eight upazilas, including six along the border. 6 lakh 43 thousand 470 people are trapped in water.

The lower areas of Sylhet city along the banks of Surma river were also flooded. At least 4 thousand families have been affected by the flood in different areas of the city.

The district administration informed that the number of people trapped in water and sheltered in Sylhet has increased till Friday afternoon.

According to the general report of the flood situation signed by the Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Sheikh Russel Hasan, 547 shelters have been opened as flood preparations in 13 upazilas of the district. 3 thousand 739 people have taken shelter in eight upazila shelters affected by floods.

Cyclone Remal brought continuous heavy rains to the hilly areas of Meghalaya and Assam in India. As a result, landslides from across the border caused floods in Sylhet's Goainghat, Companyganj, Jaintapur, Kanaighat, Jokiganj, Biyanibazar and Golapganj upazilas.

Sylhet Sadar Upazila was flooded again on Friday. In the afternoon of this day, water was seen on the surface in the streets of Taltala, Jatarpur, Machimpur and suburbs of Sylhet city. City dwellers were seen walking through dirty water. However, a few blocks in the suburbs were more flooded.

A press release signed by Public Relations Officer of Sylhet City Corporation Sajlu Lashkar on Friday evening said, “The acting mayor, councilors and officials of Sylhet City Corporation were active throughout the day regarding the flood situation. They monitored the flood situation in different areas of the city from Friday morning.

Ward-by-ward shelters are being prepared for water-logged people, the notification said, “Forty families of Matin Mier Colony of the same ward have taken shelter in Kishori Mohan Government Primary School of Ward No. 15 of the city and in a five-storey vacant building next to it.”

Public relations officer Sajlu Laskar said, “According to the information provided by various councilors, 4 thousand families have already been affected by the flood in the city. Sisik is making arrangements to send them sufficient quantity of dry food.

On this day at 4:30 pm, Acting Mayor Md visited the city's 15th, 22nd and 24th Ward, Subhanighat, Upshahar, Terratan area. Mukhlishur Rahman Kamran, Chief Executive Officer. Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Local Councilor Shahana Begum Shanu, Ward No. 22 Councilor Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury Masum, Ward No. 24 Councilor Humayun Kabir Suhin, Public Relations Officer Sajlu Laskar.

At that time, Acting Mayor Makhlishur Rahman Kamran said, “Due to the torrential downpour and heavy rains, the water level of Sylhet's Nad River has already flooded the lower areas of Sylhet. Flood water is rushing towards the city.

Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Md. Under the supervision of Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, all preparations have been completed as a preliminary to deal with the crisis.”

Earlier, Sylhet City Corporation held an emergency meeting on Thursday to deal with the flood situation. In the meeting, various decisions were taken by canceling the leave of the officers and employees.

District Water Development Board Executive Engineer Deepak Ranjan Das said, “Water is flowing over the flood limit at three points of Surma-Kushiara river in Sylhet till Friday evening. Out of this Surma Sylhet city point is 4 cm of width, Kanighat point is 92 cm.

At Kushiara Jokiganj point, water is flowing two centimeters above Vidtseema. And the water of Sylhet's other rivers is flowing under Bipatseema.

According to the report of the district administration, 2 lakh 45 thousand 750 people were trapped in Goainghat upazila due to flood. All 13 unions of the upazila have been affected by floods. And 1 thousand 242 people have taken shelter in 56 shelters.

Out of the six unions of Companiganj upazila, three unions were flooded and 93 thousand people were trapped in water. 73 people have taken shelter in 35 shelters in the upazila.

Nine out of 10 unions of Kanighat upazila have been flooded. 80 thousand 600 people are trapped in water. 1 thousand 476 people have taken shelter in 31 shelters.

Three unions of Jaintapur Upazila were flooded and 65,000 people were trapped in water. 48 shelters have been opened in this upazila. 675 people have taken shelter there.

1 lakh 48 thousand 500 people have been trapped in water due to flooding in eight out of nine unions in Jokiganj upazila. Among the 55 shelters of the upazila, 198 people have taken shelter.

Five of the 10 Unions of Biyanibazar Upazila were flooded; 5 thousand 500 people are trapped in water here. The number of shelters is 67; 60 people have taken shelter.

Out of 11 unions of Golapganj upazila, 3 thousand 500 people were affected by flood in only one union. Out of 57 shelters in the upazila, 15 people have taken shelter.

Six of the seven unions of newly flooded Sylhet Sadar Upazila have been flooded. 1 thousand 620 people are trapped in water. The number of shelters in this upazila is 29; No one has taken shelter yet.
