Heavy rains and landslides from upstream have caused severe flooding in the south-eastern districts of the country. The floods took their worst form in Feni.
Besides Chittagong, Comilla, Noakhali, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Brahmanbaria, Laxmipur, Khagrachari and Cox's Bazar districts have been affected by floods. So far (till Friday evening) 15 people have died due to floods in these districts.
The Press Wing of the Chief Adviser reported this information with reference to the Ministry of Disaster and Relief at 7:30 pm on Friday.
It is reported that the number of flood affected districts is 11 (Feni, Comilla, Chittagong, Khagrachari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Laxmipur and Cox's Bazar). Upazila 77 Upazila flooded and 589 unions/municipalities affected.
In 11 districts, a total of 9 lakh 46 thousand 769 families have become watertight. The number of affected people is 48 lakh 69 thousand 299 people, 15 people died. 13 men, 2 women. Among the dead are 4 in Comilla, 1 in Feni, 4 in Chittagong, 1 in Noakhali, 1 in Brahmanbaria, 1 in Laxmipur and 3 in Cox's Bazar.
A total of 3,176 shelters have been opened to provide shelter to water-logged/damaged people and a total of 1 lakh 15 thousand 30 people and 18 thousand 96 cattle have been sheltered in the shelters, the statement said.
A total of 639 medical teams are operational to provide medical care to the victims of 11 districts.
Necessary instructions have been given to the District Commissioners of the flood affected districts to coordinate with the anti-discrimination student movement coordinator, army, navy, medical team and other volunteers.
A round-the-clock control room has been opened in the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. 0255101115 is open for information and assistance. Army, Navy, Coast Guard and BGB are engaged in rescue operations in flood affected areas of Feni, Noakhali, Chittagong, Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Habiganj and Laxmipur districts in coordination with district administration.
The in-charge adviser and secretary of the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief visited the flood-affected areas on site to monitor the flood situation. Advisors are still in place in the affected area. Labor and Employment and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmood Sajeeb Bhuiyan is currently stationed in the affected area.
