Spain has decided to stop all arms and military technology trade with Israel in protest of the ongoing conflict in Gaza and Israeli attacks. The proposal was officially passed by the country's national parliament on Wednesday (October 8).
According to the new decision, no arms, military equipment or technology can be traded with Israel. Even ships and planes carrying military fuel or equipment to Israel cannot use Spanish ports and airspace.
Spain is one of the most staunchly anti-Israel countries in the European Union. Earlier, the government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has repeatedly spoken strongly against the Israeli aggression in Gaza.
While the left-wing Podemos party supported the government's proposal in parliament, the right-wing Vox and the conservative Popular Party opposed it.
Podemos leader Ione Bellara said, “The government needs to take more drastic measures. It is time to cancel all existing arms deals with Israel.”
Spain's Finance Minister Carlos Cuerpo said, “This ban highlights Spain's moral standing in the international arena.” The country's defense minister, Margarita Robles, said, “We stopped arms sales to Israel immediately after the Hamas attack on October 7 last year.”
