Steelers get bad Aaron Rodgers news ahead of NFL free agency

In his first season as quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Aaron Rodgers led the team to the playoffs, only to suffer an early exit in the Wild Card Round.

After the Packers lost to the Houston Texans 30-6 in January, questions immediately arose about Rodgers’ future with the team. The 42-year-old Super Bowl winner and multi-time NFL MVP indicated before the season that it would likely be his last in the league.

Once an announcement arrived that longtime Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was stepping down from the job, it seemed to solidify that notion for Rodgers further. When the team hired former Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy for the position, some speculated that Rodgers might play again for his former coach, with whom he won Super Bowl XLV in 2011.

On Wednesday, NFL insider Aditi Kinkhabwala revealed what could be disappointing news for Steelers fans. According to Kikhabwala, while on 93.7 The Fan, there is a “minuscule chance” that Rodgers will return for the Steelers next season.

According to an X message from Andrew Fillipponi, Kinkhabwala indicated that it is Rodgers’ decision, not the Steelers’, and is based on their observations from the end of last season.

The veteran quarterback shut down questions regarding his retirement decision during the postgame press conference after his team lost in the Wild Card Round. His 2025-26 NFL season included him throwing for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns with seven interceptions.

Rodgers has played in the league for 21 seasons and appears to be nearing his retirement. Based on reports, the Steelers prefer his decision arrive before March 11, when the league’s new year officially starts and the free agency signing period begins. If he stays, they will likely look towards building around him for another playoff run.

Without Rodgers, the Steelers would face an interesting situation regarding their quarterback. They still have Mason Rudolph and Will Howard on the depth chart and could also trade for another QB. Some of those mentioned in rumors as potential trades include Kyler Murray, Anthony Richardson, and Malik Willis.

Pittsburgh also has the No. 21 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, which they could use to take a risk on a quarterback or use as part of trade talks.
