The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback competition is officially over.

On Wednesday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced that Russell Wilson has won the quarterback battle in Pittsburgh. Wilson has beat out Justin Fields for the job and will start Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons. Tomlin called it a “difficult decision.”

While Wilson entered camp with the edge over Fields, the two engaged in a serious quarterback battle over the last few weeks. Neither quarterback played especially well in the preseason. Wilson went 10-for-12 for 73 yards. Fields went 19-for-27 for 199 yards.

In the end, Tomlin elected to go with Wilson, who will now look to revitalize a Steelers offense that has struggled over the last few seasons with a carousel of starting quarterbacks.

Wilson, 35, signed with the Steelers this offseason after being released by the Denver Broncos. The nine-time Pro Bowler with the Seattle Seahawks had a solid 2023 season, throwing for 3,070 yards with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Wilson led the Broncos to a 7-8 record in his 15 starts last season. This year, he’ll look to get the Steelers back to the playoffs for a second consecutive season. The Steelers went 10-7 last season and lost to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round.
