Team USA basketball coach Steve Kerr has used Steph Curry’s famous “night night” celebration against Donald Trump.
The Golden State Warriors and Team USA coach took to the lectern on the first night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago.
Speaking about how he would be backing Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to win in November, Kerr told the DNC crowd: “After the results are tallied that night, we can, in the words of the great Steph Curry, we can tell Donald Trump: ‘Night, night.'”

The reference is to Steph Curry’s famous celebration after a win, which became an internet sensation after he did it at the Paris Olympics, where Team USA won their fifth consecutive Olympic gold. Many captioned it “nuit, nuit” which means “night, night” in French.
Newsweek has contacted Steph Curry and Steve Kerr’s representatives for comment.
Describing his decision to speak at the DNC, Kerr acknowledged the backlash he would get for taking a political stance. “I know very well that speaking out about politics these days comes with risks. I can see the ‘shut up and whistle’ tweets being fired off as we speak. But I also knew as soon as I was asked that it was too important as an American citizen not to speak up in an election of this magnitude.”
He explained his reason for backing Harris and Walz, saying they had the necessary “leadership qualities” that would see them to the White House.
Kerr also took the opportunity to dispense out some coaching advice to vice-president nominee Tim Walz, who coached the Mankato West Scarlets to win state championships in 1999.
“I have to say, Coach Walz, way too much reliance on the blitz in ’99 against Mankato East. You had a strong defensive line. I would have played more press coverage with your corners and dropped the safeties into a Tampa 2 but that’s just me,” joked Kerr.
“Sorry – I wanted you to know how I feel every day of the NBA season, ” he added.
Kerr has long been opposed to Donald Trump and was one of the key sporting figures who was critical of him during his presidency, often taking him to task on matters such as gun control.
For his part, Steph Curry is also no fan of the former president. After Kevin Plank called the then president Trump an “asset” to the US, Curry later reporters: “”I agree with that description, if you remove the ‘et’ from asset.”
Trump also once revoked Curry’s invitation to the White House when the NBA star said he didn’t want to attend.
The DNC is running for the rest of this week, with both Barack and Michelle Obama taking to the stage this evening.
