Heavy rains in the Indian state of Tripura for several days have complicated the situation. Due to the incessant rain, various towns there have been submerged under water.
The authorities have opened the sluice gates of the dam installed there as the water in the Dumbur Reservoir is nearing the limit. As a result, the upstream water is flooding various towns of Tripura and entering Bangladesh.
Tripura Times and Borok Times reported that the sluice of the Dambur reservoir was opened.
As a result of the opening of the sluice gates, houses and agricultural land were washed away in large areas of Gomti and Sipahizla districts. The water is flowing downstream through various rivers.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha told reporters at his office on Wednesday (August 21), due to heavy rains, the state's only hydropower project in Gomti district has accumulated more water than required in the Dumbur reservoir, so a major disaster could occur anytime the dam breaks; In this situation, the reservoir authorities opened the sluice gate and released the excess water by announcing in advance in the local area. As a result, a dire situation has arisen in houses and agricultural lands in large areas of Gomti and Sipahizla districts.
Borok Times reports that after 31 years Tripura authorities have opened the sluice gates of Dumbur reservoir dam. The sluice gates of the dam were opened in 1993 due to earlier heavy rainfall. However, compared to that time, the flood situation is much wider this time. Authorities said the sluice gates were opened earlier because of the fear that the damage could have been worse if the dam broke.
Highlighting the overall situation of the state, Chief Minister Manik Saha said that the southern district of the state has received 375 mm of rain in the last 24 hours. Other districts of the state also received about 250 mm of rain. Such rainfall has never happened before.
It is feared that many more places will be submerged under water if the rain continues like this. According to the Met Office, such rains may continue for two more days.
Meanwhile, as the water of Dumbur reservoir is coming downstream, the water of Tripura's Howrah, Dhalai, Muhuri and Khoai rivers also flows over the Bipatsima and enters through various districts of Bangladesh including Feni, Comilla, Brahmanbaria, Khagrachari and flows through its lower areas.
Due to the heavy rains, the floodwaters from upstream have entered Feni district causing severe floods. Streets and houses in the three upazilas of Fulgazi, Parashuram and Chagalnaya in the north of the district are now under water. Many villages in Sadar Upazila, Sonagazi were also flooded. So far one person has been killed and one is missing in Ban water.
The waters of Muhuri, Kahua and Ceylon rivers are flowing over 100 cm above the danger zone. Hundreds of thousands of people from two hundred villages in the district are moving to safe shelters. The local administration and various voluntary organizations have come to the ground with relief assistance for the flood victims. Army and BGB have already reached the ground with speed boats and boats to rescue the victims.
On the other hand, many low-lying areas of Comilla, Noakhali, Lakshmipur have also been flooded. Khagrachari, Brahmanbaria, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and some other districts are also flowing over the border.
