One name that has been circling around NFL trade talks has been Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III. Houston has a loaded wide receiver group and Metchie III could become the odd man out.
Teams have reached out to Houston about Metchie III to gauge interest in moving the former second-round draft pick. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the news of the trade interest on social media.
Sources: Multiple teams have reached out to the #Texans to see if WR John Metchie III would be available in trade due to the plethora of receivers on their roster. It’s unclear if Houston would move him, but several team are keeping a close eye.

If the Texans do trade Metchie III, they could likely get back a decent draft pick for him. With the loaded wide receiving room that they have, Houston doesn’t have a need for the former Alabama product.
The biggest narrative around Metchie III so far in his career has been him overcoming a cancer diagnosis. Shortly after being drafted by the Texans, he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia.
Metchie III sat out his rookie season to undergo treatment and thankfully was able to be cleared to play football again. However, the adversity he faced forever changed him.
“There are a lot of challenging things that challenge you spiritually, mentally, physically,” he said. “But the most challenging part was just dealing with it with my family being in a different country for the most part. They would come down, but most of my loved ones were in a different country.”
He made his NFL debut last season in Week 2 for Houston. Appearing in 16 games for the Texans a year ago, Metchie III put up 16 catches for 158 yards and zero touchdowns.

Houston might not want to give up on the former second-rounder so soon, but there are only so many players who can receive minutes. The Texans’ wide receiver core is made up of Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Robert Woods, Noah Brown, and others.
He would likely be the fifth or sixth receiver on the depth chart so Houston may elect to move him. Metchie III was a star while in college, helping the Crimson Tide win the championship in 2020.
It remains to be seen what his future holds but his NFL chapter seems to be just getting written.
