Temperatures will drop into the 50s this weekend in Texas, much below the state’s typical hot and humid September conditions.
Earlier this week, much of Texas battled torrential rain and the threat of flash floods as a slow-moving, moisture-laden storm system moved over the Gulf Coast states. Now, a dry air mass will bring cool temperatures to the Lone Star State this weekend.
“Saturday afternoon: Central Texas will feel like an entirely different planet,” KEYE-TV in Austin meteorologist Avery Tomasco posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday morning.
“Our cold front sweeps through with a quick and hefty drop in humidity. Give it another ~12 hours, and that dry air will help temps drop into the 50s/60s by Sunday morning. We earned this,” he said.

NWS weather forecaster Orlando Bermudez told Newsweek that low temperatures will dip into the low 60s overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning. Low temperatures are expected to be in the low 60s again on Monday, around 8 to 10 degrees below normal for this time of year.
High temperatures also will be lower than normal, Bermudez said, with highs in the 80s forecast for the Austin area on Saturday. Austin-area residents can expect highs in the mid-80s on Sunday, with temperatures creeping back into the upper 80s by Monday afternoon.
Normal lows for this time of year are around 72 degrees, Bermudez said. Normal highs are in the low 90s.
“It will be great, fall-like weather this weekend,” Bermudez said.
“Partly cloudy today with a low chance of isolated storms for mainly the Hill Country & Coastal Plains,” NWS Austin posted on X on Friday. “High temps are forecast to be in the mid 80s to low 90s. A drier airmass moves into our area this weekend into early next week with much cooler, early Fall like low temps.”

After the dip in temperatures, wet weather will return across parts of Texas next week. Bermudez said moisture is expected to move into the area on Monday and into Tuesday, with chances for rain showers from Tuesday through Thursday. He said the wet weather is related to a disturbance swirling over the Gulf of Mexico.
Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring three disturbances in the Atlantic, including one in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Texas. That disturbance, which has only a 10 percent chance of forming into a tropical storm over the next 48 hours, is to blame for the moisture forecast for Texas next week.
The NHC forecast said that although tropical storm development is unlikely with the Gulf system, coastal Texas could experience heavy rain as soon as this weekend.
