The differences between Iran and the United States are still unresolved

Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that despite the progress of the talks between the United States and Iran to reduce the ongoing tension in the Middle East, the disagreement on two important issues has not been resolved. As a result, the prospect of a final agreement quickly remains uncertain.

News agency Anadolu Agency reported that while some progress has been made in the talks, there are still major differences on several key issues. “We have made progress on some issues, but there are still big gaps on many important issues. We are not even close to a final agreement,” Ghalibaf said in a televised address on Sunday.

He said that Iran wants to proceed with the talks step by step and on the basis of mutual commitment. In his words, “We will do our duty and the other side will do nothing—it cannot happen.”

Ghalibaf clarified that disagreements with the US over Iran's nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz issue still remain. However, despite these complications, Tehran is interested in moving on the path of long-term peace, he said.

At the same time, he claimed, the military operations of the United States and Israel have failed to fulfill their objectives. According to him, the then Donald Trump administration could not achieve the goal of changing the government or destroying Iran's missile capabilities.

Ghalibaf added that the US is now sending messages through intermediaries after failing to achieve targets despite warnings and deadlines. He claimed that Iran had accepted a temporary ceasefire so that the US could consider their demands.

It may be noted that the first round of talks between the two countries was held last week with the mediation of Pakistan and efforts are underway for the second round of talks in Islamabad. The conflict is currently on hold after a two-week ceasefire that came into effect on April 8.
