The destruction of Gazi Tires factory in Rupganj, Narayanganj may have a big impact on the country's market. Traders fear that the price of all types of tires will increase. Even opportunities to get good quality products at low prices may be reduced.
Meanwhile, more than 2 thousand workers of the factory are now unemployed. Officials said they want to turn around, but need government support.
Buet's research says that there is a demand of about 2.5 million tires every year in the country. This has made Bangladesh an attractive market for tire industry. To meet this demand, Gazi Group had the largest production as a domestic company. On August 26, a group of miscreants looted the factory and set it on fire. And the factory was completely destroyed.
Gazi Group chairman Golam Dastgir Gazi was a minister in the previous Awami League government. He is a former Member of Parliament from Rupganj Constituency. The police arrested him last Sunday after the change of power. The next day, the factory owned by him was set on fire.
Due to the destruction of one of the largest tire factories in the country, there is a fear that the price of products will increase in the country.
Ahsanul Karim, the owner of BM Enterprises, a company that sells tires, said, 'They (importers) will now say that earlier it was done in the country, now it is not done in the country. We import, the dollar is expensive, we have to pay taxes. They will increase the price by giving many such reasons.'
Traders in this sector also said that it will not be possible to maintain the quality of tires that Gazi Group used to provide at a low price.
2 thousand 300 workers worked in this factory of Gazi Tires. All of them are unemployed now. The company wants to turn around even in such a reality. However, they have sought government policy support for this.
Gazi Tires Executive Director Retired Brigadier General Md. Kamruzzaman said, 'They are all workers. But we left them. I am not sure where the company will pay them next month. We will present to them (the government) the beginning of all our matters. We will certainly seek their cooperation. It is not possible for us to turn around without their supervision, without the supervision of the people of the area.'
According to the company, 60 percent of the heavy vehicle tire market and 45 percent of the small tire market in the country were supplied from this factory. Which started in 1974.
