The water of Kaptai lake is increasing, the sluice has been opened three feet

The water in the Kaptai lake has increased again due to the hill slopes from upstream and the rainfall in Rangamati. The water level of the lake has again reached the dangerous limit.

As a result, on Monday (September 2), 16 sluices of Kaptai Dam were opened to three and a half feet to reduce the water. In this, 68 thousand cusecs of water is being released in Karnaphuli every second.

Earlier on Sunday (September 1), the sluice was opened by 2 and a half feet, but as the water in the lake continued to rise, the sluice was opened by 3 and a half feet from this morning. Currently the water level of Kaptai Lake is 108.74 MSL (Mean Sea Level). Maximum water holding capacity of the lake is 109 MSL.

ATM Abduzzah, Manager of Kaptai Water Power Plant, said that the gate has been opened by three and a half feet due to the increase in water. 68,000 cusecs of water is being discharged every second.

Besides, 220 MW of electricity is being produced by keeping 5 units of the power plant operational. 32 thousand cusecs of water is released every second.

Meanwhile, the lower reaches of the lake have been suffering for the past two weeks as the water level in the lake has risen again. About 16 thousand people are trapped in water. About 800 people are staying in the shelter. Flooding occurred in the lower areas of 17 unions of other upazilas including Rangamati Sadar, Longadu, Naniarchar, Barkal, Baghaichhari.

For the fifth time, water is rising again in several villages in Baghaichhari upazila. Due to the lack of water in the lake, people are suffering. However, many have complained about not getting relief yet.

In this regard, Rangamati District Commissioner Mohammad Mosharf Hossain Khan said, 92 May for the people trapped in water in the district. Tons of food have been allocated. At the same time, the dam continues without water. Hopefully the water will recede in a few days.
