The world's oldest person has died

The world's oldest person, US-born Maria Branias Moreira, has died at the age of 117. Maria's family announced this on social media on Tuesday.

Guinness World Records said in a statement that Maria died at the age of 117 years and 168 days. This age makes him the eighth oldest person of verifiable age in history.

“Maria passed away peacefully at a nursing home in Catalonia, Spain, where she had lived for the past two decades,” the statement said. He died on Monday, it said.

On Tuesday, Moreira's family published a post on his X account announcing the death.

It said, 'He passed away the way he wanted: in his sleep, in peace and without pain.'
