US Postal Service Announces New Stamp Designs

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) revealed two new stamp designs on Monday that will start circulating next month, one of which celebrates the Jewish festival of Hanukkah while the other is dedicated to the African American holiday of Kwanzaa.

The new stamps join the USPS Forever series, which means their price will always be equal in value to the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price. On release in September, the two stamps will be available for an individual price of 73 cents.

The Hanukkah and Kwanzaa stamps will be released before celebrations for the two holidays begin. The Hanukkah stamp will be released on September 1 in Washington, D.C., while the Kwanzaa one will be released on September 15 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“With the release of this new stamp, the Postal Service celebrates the joyous holiday of Hanukkah with a charming image of a hanukkiah, the nine-branch candelabra used during the holiday,” USPS wrote in the stamp’s description. The stamp shows a white, lit hanukkiah on a light blue background.

Hanukkah will be celebrated between December 25 and January 2, 2025.

The Kwanzaa stamp shows two Black women and a Black man dancing on a red and green background. The Kwanzaa holiday, created in 1966 by activist Maulana Karenga, incorporates harvest festival traditions from across the African continent and celebrates African American culture.

“Centered around the holiday’s seven founding principles — unity (umoja), self-determination (kujichagulia), collective work and responsibility (ujima), cooperative economics (ujamaa), purpose (nia), creativity (kuumba), and faith (imani), the holiday emphasizes the rich heritage and aspirations of the African American community,” USPS wrote.

A total of 19 new stamps have been scheduled for release in 2024, 15 of which have already been issued. These include a stamp dedicated to Betty Ford, wife of the 38th president Gerald R. Ford and first lady from 1974 to 1977; one dedicated to the Bluegrass music style; two commemorating the historic photos taken by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope; and one celebrating civil rights pioneer Constance Baker Motley.

After the Hanukkah and Kwanzaa ones, just two more stamps will be released before the end of the year. One is “Thank You, Healthcare Community,” to be issued on October 1 in Washington, D.C. The stamp, part of the Forever series, is dedicated to the sacrifices and dedications made by healthcare workers in the U.S. The healthcare sector employs nearly 16 million people in the country, 80 percent of which are women.

The other, “Winter Whimsy,” is a stamp featuring four different designs of a snowflake over a navy blue, teal, tan, or dark blue-green background. It will be released without a ceremonial event on October 10 in Park City, Utah.

“The designs evoke not only snowflakes but also a popular seasonal craft—the fun activity of cutting folded paper with scissors, then opening it up to reveal a delicate, symmetrical design,” USPS wrote in the stamp’s description. “The stamps’ lacy designs may call to mind memories of the fun schoolroom craft. They may also conjure brisk outdoor adventures and winter’s natural beauty.”

The Winter Whimsy stamps are also part of the Forever series and will be issued in booklets of 20 stamps.
