Vikings Make Surprising Change to Quarterback Room

The Minnesota Vikings continue to shake up their roster just a little more than a week before the start of their 2024 NFL season. The Vikings have signed veteran quarterback and longtime backup Brett Rypien and waived 2023 NFL Draft pick Jaren Hall.

ESPN’s Kevin Seifert shared the news via Twitter/X.

Rypien joins Minnesota after a brief stint with the division-rival Chicago Bears this past training camp and preseason. Rypien signed a one-year contract with the Bears at the start of free agency this past offseason but was released prior to the 53-man roster cutdown on Tuesday.

Rypien doesn’t have to travel far for his new team and will join fellow veterans Sam Darnold and Nick Mullens in the Vikings quarterback room. The veteran quarterback will start his sixth NFL season after spending time with the Denver Broncos (2019-22), Los Angeles Rams (2023), Seattle Seahawks (2023), and the New York Jets (2023).

The former Boise State quarterback entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent and signed with the Broncos after the 2019 NFL Draft. He has played in 10 NFL games with four starts and has recorded a 2-2 record.

Rypien was a standout at Boise State — starting in 49 of 50 games — and finished his career as the Mountain West’s all-time leader in passing yards (13,581), completions (1,036), and 300-yard passing games (21).

In his time in the NFL, Rypien has tallied 98 completions for 950 yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The 28-year-old started his first career in Week 4 of the 2020 season and completed 19-of-31 passes for a career-high 242 passing yards and two touchdowns, leading the Broncos to a 37-20 victory over the Jets.

Rypien’s 2023 season was a struggle. He appeared in two games, with one start with the Rams, completing 13-of-28 passes for 130 yards and one interception in a 20-3 loss to the Green Bay Packers. After that, he had a brief stint with the Seahawks practice squad and closed out the season with the Jets active roster.

As for Hall, the Vikings drafted him in the 2023 NFL Draft with the No. 164 overall pick in the fifth round. In Week 8 of the 2023 season, he played his first regular season snaps after Vikings starting quarterback, Kirk Cousins, suffered a torn Achilles tendon.

Hall started in his first NFL game on Nov. 5 but left the game after suffering a concussion. He then started in Week 17 against the Packers and completed 5-of-10 passes for 67 yards, an interception, and a lost fumble. Hall was benched at halftime.
