The Grand Canyon is facing an unexpected crisis as its only water pipeline has collapsed, resulting in canceled overnight stays during the peak tourist season.
Hotels in the surrounding area have withdrawn reservations due to a lack of provisions. No water is being pumped to either the South or North Rims of the 1,904 square mile expanse.
The park’s main water source, a 12.5-mile-long pipeline, broke down after a series of failures dating back to July. Built in the 1960s, the infrastructure has long been plagued by issues dating back to 2010. As many as 85 different breaks have happened during this time.
With temperatures topping 91°F at this time of year, officials say there is little else that can be done to ensure the safety of visitors.
Water restrictions are in place through the Labor Day holiday, impacting hotels that are typically at full capacity.
The area has been placed under Stage 4 water restrictions, where officials are calling on locals to shower for less than five minutes at a time, complete selective laundry loads, and refrain from refilling their pools.
As a result, overnight stays at key lodges like El Tovar and Bright Angel Lodge are now canceled.

The park has continued to struggle with its water supply throughout the summer.
A break on Aug. 20 prompted park officials to implement immediate conservation measures, particularly on the South Rim.
“Effective immediately, the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will begin phasing into greater water restrictions and conservation measures due to a new break in the Transcanyon Waterline. The North Rim will begin preliminary water conservation measures,” the National Park Service (NPS) said in a statement.
Hikers are advised to bring as much water on their travels as they can.
Heidi Zahner Younts from Iowa City, Iowa, shared on the park’s Facebook page Wednesday that she and her daughter had planned “the trip of a lifetime” for the weekend. She expressed her disappointment, calling the situation sad.
Thankfully, by that evening Younts had managed to book a different hotel outside the park. She added that she hoped the water restrictions might result in “less traffic and people.”
These measures are crucial for ensuring the safety and sustainability of water resources. The goal is to restore full operational status for overnight guests on the South Rim as quickly as possible.
The pipeline has seen more than 85 major breaks since 2010, but none as severe as what has happened this summer.

Despite the restrictions, day visits to the park are still allowed. Hotels outside the park in Tusayan remain unaffected.
The timing of this pipeline failure is a blow to tourism in the area.
Josh Coddington, from the Arizona Office of Tourism, expects an increase in calls from concerned tourists.
The perception that the park is facing limitations could hurt local economies in nearby towns like Flagstaff and Williams.
“The Grand Canyon is known not only throughout the U.S., but throughout the world, and people love visiting it,” he said.
Park officials are working to restore full operations as quickly as possible. However, the repair process is complicated by the pipeline’s location in a narrow, hazardous section of the canyon.
A $208 million project to rehabilitate the waterline is underway, but full upgrades aren’t expected until 2027.
The park aims to meet the water needs of 6 million visitors and 2,500 year-round residents.
