Workers block the highway in Gazipur, suffer from traffic jam

In Sreepur of Gazipur, the workers have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for various demands, including Eid bonus, increasing the percentage of annual dividend, stopping forced retrenchment, increasing the attendance bonus, extending the Eid holiday. In this situation, thousands of passengers have suffered due to long traffic jams on both sides of the highway. During this time, several vehicles were vandalized.

On Saturday (August 24) afternoon, Paramount Textile Mill workers protested by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gilarchala area of ​​the upazila. The movement was still going on at 4 pm till the last news. This has caused traffic jams in several kilometers of the highway.

Talking to the agitating workers, it is known that the factory authorities forcibly retrench the workers by signing the resignation letter without any notice. Besides, only three days holiday is given on Eid, the amount of annual dividend is relatively less. We discussed the issues with the factory authorities several times but they could not provide any solution.

Factory worker Sharmin Akhter said, 'Many of us have monthly dues. Apart from this, we have been making various logical demands including increasing the percentage of Eidul Azhar bonus annual dividend. But the authorities are not paying any attention to our demands. Therefore, we all consulted at least four thousand workers of the factory and came down to the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway to collect their demands.

Immediately after the incident, the industrial police are working to bring the situation under control from the spot. However, they did not agree to give any statement on this matter. Prior to this, the workers marched and occupied the highway. Efforts to resolve the matter are ongoing.
