World Map Shows Most Risky Cities for Tourists

There is a long list of things to take into consideration when planning a vacation, such as travel costs and itineraries. Another major factor is personal safety.

Newsweek has mapped the riskiest cities in the world for tourists, according to a report compiled by Forbes Advisor.

Forbes Advisor’s report was compiled by comparing 60 destinations across metrics which included:

  • Crime risk.
  • Health security risk: The level and quality of health care services and infrastructure.
  • Personal security risk: Risk from crime, violence, terrorist threats, and natural disasters.
  • U.S. Department of State travel safety rating.
  • Digital security risk: The ability of citizens to use the internet without risk of privacy violations, identity theft, and other forms of online attacks.

First on the list for riskiest cities was Caracas, Venezuela, with a score of 100 out of 100.

It was ranked in the report as having the highest crime risk, the fourth highest personal security risk, the second highest digital security risk, and the highest health security risk. On top of this, the city had been given the worst travel safety rating by the Department of State—Level 4: Do not travel.

Karachi, Pakistan came in second with a score of 93.12.

It was ranked as the city with the highest personal security risk, as well as the fourth highest digital security risk.

The city had the fourth highest infrastructure risk—infrastructure that was vulnerable to natural disasters, according to the report. It also had the second worst travel safety rating by the State Department—Level 4: Reconsider Travel.

Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, was the third riskiest city for tourists, according to the study. With a score of 91.67, it had the highest digital security risk.

Yangon also had third highest personal, health, and infrastructure security risks, as well as the worst travel rating from the Department of State.

Tokyo came in second, despite being one of the most populous cities in the world.

The Japanese capital had the lowest health security risk, the best travel safety rating from the Department of State, and seventh lowest crime risk.
