Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said that 30 to 40 percent votes have been cast in the first phase of the Sixth Upazila Parishad elections.
He told reporters this information on Wednesday (May 8) afternoon after the end of voting.
Qazi Habibul Awal said that polling has ended peacefully. Some irregularities occurred like conflict. Two centers have been closed. There were 34 incidents in which 37 people were injured. All this happened outside the center.
Polling in 139 upazilas has been completed in the first phase of the sixth upazila parishad election. Now counting. In this phase, voting was held in EVMs in 22 upazilas and ballots in 117.
Polling started on Wednesday from 8 am till 4 pm. Voter turnout is low in the morning but it increases slightly as the afternoon progresses.
This local government election is being held in four phases. In the first phase, polling was conducted in 139 upazila parishads of Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal, Faridpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Comilla and Chittagong regions.
The first phase of polling started in 139 upazilas of 59 districts of the country from 8 am today. Out of these 22 are conducted by Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and the rest by ballot paper. The Election Commission (EC) has postponed the election in three upazilas of the hill district Bandarban as the operation of the joint forces is ongoing.
1,635 candidates are competing for the post of chairman, vice chairman and female vice chairman in each upazila in 139 upazila parishads. Out of this, 570 are on the post of chairman, 625 are vice chairman and 440 are on the post of female vice chairman.
In the first phase, eight chairman posts, 10 vice chairman posts and female vice chair posts, i.e. 28 people have already won unopposed.
According to the EC data, more than 28 million people in the upazila will exercise their right to vote in this phase.
