40 Bengali-speaking Muslims in India's northeastern state of Assam have been labeled as foreigners and sent to detention camps. In the last one month, three times the residents of Barpeta district have been identified as foreigners by the Foreigners Tribunal of the state.
There are nine women among them. BBC Bangla has found at least one of the detainees, whose family claims his name is on the final list of the National Register of Citizens, meaning he is a citizen of India, recognized by the Indian government after going through a complicated process.
Activists say 22 people were summoned to the police station on August 8 and 9 and another 28 were taken into custody on Monday, September 2. After being produced before the Alien Identification Tribunal in Assam, all of them were taken to the transit camp for identified foreigners at Matia in Goalpara.
The transit camp is the largest detention center in India, although it has now been renamed as Transit Camp.
