400 crore Tangail saree sales potential


Traders are expecting sales of Tangail sarees worth Tk 400 crore in upcoming Eid and Pahela Baisakh. As the political environment is good, wholesalers from different parts of the country are coming to buy sarees. This time half silk, mix cotton, pure silk and cotton sarees have been made more, they said.

Traders said that sarees are produced in various areas including Bajitpur, Krishnapur, Belta, Putiyajani, Kalihati Balla, but Patrail Tangail of Delduar is known as the capital of sarees. Tangail sarees worth around Tk 400 crore will be sold this time. As the political situation in the country is normal, the business of Tangail sarees will be better than last few years. As Eid is in the heat, heat tolerant sarees are being sold. The workers are busy weaving sarees to meet the needs of wholesalers and buyers.

Tangail saree trader Minhaj Mia said that they have made and stocked new sarees even before the fast started. This time half silk, mix cotton, pure silk and cotton sarees are made more. A week before the start of fasting, traders from different parts of the country are coming to buy sarees at wholesale prices.

A customer named Fatema Tabasum from Savar said that it was difficult to come to buy pure Tangail sarees. Bought seven sarees for myself and family members. Means good and affordable. So for several years I come to Tangail to buy sarees for different festivals.

Humayan Sikder from Narayanganj said, customers appreciate Tangail sarees of different quality for any festival including Eid as Bahari designs and prices are within reach. I buy sarees from here before any festival and sell them in my locality as the price is relatively low.

Raghunath Basak, President of the District Saree Traders Association said, Tangail Saree business will be a little better after Corona. Tangail sarees are always in demand. However, it increases several times around Eid. So the production has been increased several times. Last year 74 lakh pieces of Tangail sarees were exported to neighboring India. About 2.6 million dollars of foreign currency has been earned from there.

Palash Chandra Basak, director of Tangail Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that due to the stable political environment this year, the businessmen's saree sales have been much better than in the past few years. Tangail sarees are valued in different districts of the country including the capital Dhaka. In total, Tangail sarees worth around Tk 400 crore will be sold. Businessmen will be able to turn around.

He also said that most of the sarees were sold wholesale in the first week of fasting. Now buyers from different parts of the country are flocking to buy retail sarees.
