In July-August, more than 18,000 people were injured and treated in hospitals due to conflict-violence around the country around the quota reform movement, anti-discrimination student movement and movement to overthrow the government.

This information was found in the draft report of the committee formed by the government. The report was submitted to the Ministry of Health last Thursday.

The death toll was reported at 622. These numbers of deaths are taken from hospitals. However, many who died during the agitation were not brought to the hospital. So the actual death toll is much higher.

Health Ministry sources said, this is a preliminary or draft list. Data cleaning is now underway. This list will be published on the website. Then some more names may be added. The number of deaths will also change.

The Management Information System (MIS) under the Directorate of Health is preparing the list of injured and killed people in the movement.

The number of people injured and killed from last July 15 to August 5 is in the list. An official of MIS said on condition of anonymity that MIS has compiled the information officially provided by the government and private hospital authorities of all departments. Data collection and verification process is still ongoing.

How many wounded in which category?

According to the government, the number of people injured in the movement so far is 18 thousand 247. Of the eight divisions, Dhaka Division naturally had the highest number of casualties. 11 thousand 73 people were injured in Dhaka Division. The least injured were in Barisal division. 236 people were injured in this department.

After Dhaka, Chittagong Division suffered the most injuries. 1 thousand 738 people in this category. Then 1 thousand 546 people in Khulna division. 1 thousand 205 people and 1 thousand 154 people in Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions respectively. 718 and 577 people respectively in Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions.

According to the data obtained by MIS, 10 thousand 939 out of the injured people have received outpatient treatment. And 6 thousand 865 people received treatment from hospital admission.

MIS collects data from government and private hospitals. It can be seen that most of the injured people were treated in government hospitals. Out of 18 thousand 247 injured people, 15 thousand 689 were treated in government hospitals and 2 thousand 558 in private hospitals. However, none of the districts of Barisal, Khulna, Mymensingh and Rangpur divisions received treatment in private hospitals or clinics. None of the injured persons in these four categories have received treatment in private hospitals or clinics, but no one has informed the government yet.

It can be seen in the list of deaths that there were deaths in all sections during the movement. Most deaths in Dhaka division. 477 people died in this category. Barisal division had the least number of deaths, one. 43 and 39 people died in Chittagong and Khulna divisions respectively. 22, 19 and 17 people died in Sylhet, Rajshahi and Mymensingh districts respectively.

All the information about the death has not been received

MIS has received the information of 622 people killed during the movement across the country. Everyone's information is in the hospital. However, the head of the committee, the former senior secretary of the Ministry of Health, Mohammad Humayun Kabir, said, “We have continued to try to find out the exact number of deaths from sources other than hospital sources.”

Analyzing deaths, 443 people were brought to hospital dead (brute dead) after violent incidents. The remaining 179 people died while undergoing treatment in the hospital.

The first death in this movement happened in Rangpur. 4 people died in violence in this section.

From July 16 to September 3, the media received information on the deaths of 760 people from public and private hospitals and other sources.

Over a thousand disabled

Of the patients admitted to hospital due to conflict-violence, 3,048 were seriously injured. They require surgery. However, after surgery and all kinds of treatment, at least 525 people have become more or less physically disabled.

During the agitation, the police used various types of weapons. At the beginning of the agitation, the police fired indiscriminate bullets to disperse the crowd. Many people's eyes were destroyed by bullets. According to MIS, the number of people with serious eye injuries is 647. Dhaka division has the most, 603 people. After Dhaka, the highest number is in Chittagong division, 22 people. The number of people with serious eye injuries in the remaining six categories is 22. Some have two eyes; Others may lose sight in one eye forever.

Those involved in making the list said that in most cases the hospital does not have the full address of the patient. When many patients are admitted to the hospital at once, it is not possible for the hospital staff to record all the patient's information. Again, many times the mobile number given by the patient is wrong. It is difficult to identify or pick out injured people from incomplete addresses and wrong phone numbers. This draft list will be provided on the website. If someone is excluded, proof that he has received treatment must be shown to the hospital. After that, if the hospital sends his name to MIS, it will be included in the list.

The interim government on August 15 formed a 13-member committee headed by former senior secretary of the Ministry of Health Mohammad Humayun Kabir to formulate a policy for the treatment of injured persons and provide assistance to the families of the martyrs and to prepare a complete list including the identity of the martyred and injured persons. In addition to the representatives of the Ministry of Health, the committee has representatives of eight ministries, including representatives of the anti-discrimination student movement.

Mohammad Humayun Kabir said, 'This is the initial list. This list must be cleared. After the list is cleared, the government will decide who will get the help and how.'
