Four and a half million rupees worth of gold was recovered from a passenger on a US-Bangla flight


One person was arrested with gold worth Tk 4.6 million at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. He was arrested based on intelligence information. The team of the Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation recovered gold weighing about four and a half kilograms from a passenger named Shahid Mia from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

The gold was found in US-Bangla Airlines flight BS 346 after landing at Shahjalal Airport on Friday morning. After that, he was handed over to the customs detective after filing a criminal case at the airport police station.

Assistant Director of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Circle (Ch.D.) Pradeep Kumar Sarkar said that on the basis of secret information about the arrival of a passenger with gold, a precautionary position was taken at important places including boarding gate, transit point, green channel inside the airport. Passenger Mohammad Shahid Miah completed the immigration and crossed the green channel scanning machine at 9:30 am. He was later identified by Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate team members and asked if he was carrying gold ornaments or anything of gold. He then admitted that he had gold ornaments weighing 100 grams with him. But actually gold ornaments weighing 30 grams were found with him. Denying any more gold, he was archwayed and an excessive amount of clothing was discovered on the passenger.

As the weight of the passenger's clothes was observed to be abnormal, the clothes were opened and scanned and if the presence of gold images specially hidden in the clothes was found, the passenger was brought to the customs hall. Later, in order to determine the amount of gold, 16 pieces of clothes worn by the passenger (including 9 short pants, 6 sando genji and 1 full pant) were burnt by a local goldsmith at Canopy-1 of the airport in the presence of passengers and various organizations responsible for the airport. After burning 4 thousand 462 grams of unrefined gold was determined. The total amount of gold obtained is four thousand 492 grams or four and a half kg.

The customs detective also said that the estimated market value of the gold received is Tk 46 million. The process of depositing the seized gold in the Customs House, Dhaka's valuable customs warehouse is ongoing. According to the Customs Act, the passenger was detained along with the gold. A criminal case was registered against him at the airport police station.
