Inmate who escaped from Louisiana jail captured as one remains on the run

One of the remaining escaped Louisiana inmates who was on the run for nearly a week was finally captured, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Omarion Hookfin, 19, was taken back into custody on Friday while Jamarcus Cyprian, 20, is still at large.

Sherriff Daniel Edwards said the four inmates escaped on May 25 and May 26 while participating in recreation time on the yard.

“Upon inspection of the perimeter fence, a section of the fence was found to be vulnerable and easily maneuvered in such a way that a small statured body could slide through,” according to a Facebook post from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Avery Guidry, 19, and Travon Johnson, 21, also escaped. Guidry and Johnson were taken into custody on May 26.

Deputies found them hiding in a dumpster behind a Dollar General Store in Hammond, Louisiana about 20 miles from the jail.

Based on a photo the sheriff’s office released, it appears Hookfin was found in the woods, but it is not clear how far from the jail he made it.

Jail officials did not know about the breakouts until they received a phone call on Sunday from one of the escapees’ family members, according to Chief Jimmy Travis. The relative had said two of the inmates came to a family member’s home in the middle of the night looking for a place to stay.

Newsweek attempted to reach out to the Tangipahoa Parish Sherrif’s Office for a comment but did not hear back immediately.

Who are the four inmates?

Hookfin, Johnson and Guidry were in jail for a 2022 homicide in Hammond. The homicide was part of a home invasion that ended with a 12-year-old girl in the hospital and her 33-year-old father dead.

Hookfin also acquired additional charges of aggravated battery while incarcerated in Catahoula Parish.

Cyprian, who is still on the loose, was serving time for armed robbery and weapon charges, according to the sheriff’s office.
