This is the first time T20 World Cup is being held with 20 teams. The teams are divided into four groups and the group stage competition is being held. Two of the best eight teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the Super Eight.
But nothing from the group stage will go into the Super Eight stage. That is, even if a team wins all the matches and goes to the Super Eight with a great net run rate, they will not get any advantage. Australian pacer Jos Hazlewood did not like this. So he raised questions about the format and net run rate of this year's World Cup.
Hazlewood said, 'It is very strange that the net run rate in the group stage will not be of any use in the next round. It's probably the first World Cup I've played in that format and set-up. A bit different from other World Cups.'
“Whatever you work hard for in the early rounds, even if you're unbeaten, you have a great net run rate, that won't count in the Super Eights. It's a really weird format. This is what is happening in this World Cup.'
This Tuesday morning, Australia beat Namibia by a big margin of 9 wickets and qualified for the Super Eight. Their net run rate increased to 3.580 in the big win. But they will not get any of these benefits in Super Eight. Hazlewood's regret about this year's World Cup is there.
