White Sox Set Unfortunate MLB History That Nobody Wants to Be Part Of

It’s been a rough 2024 season for the Chicago White Sox. Not only have they been the worst team in baseball for the majority of the season but they have set some unfortunate MLB history along the way.

Chicago was officially eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday, marking the earliest calendar date for a team to be eliminated in the wild-card era, which also includes the divisional era.

Chicago sits with a record of 30-94 on the season, currently 42.5 games back of the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians entering play on Sunday. They hold a record of 18-44 at home and an even worse 12-50 record on the road.

The White Sox fired manager Pedro Grifol midway through the season due to the horrendous play. Former outfielder Grady Sizemore took over recently, but things haven’t gone much better. He is essentially a placeholder for the team until they can get to the offseason and fully access the market.

Chicago will try to avoid ending the year with the worst record in baseball history. The all-time record is held by the Cleveland Spiders, who finished 20–134 in 1898.

The modern-day loss record is held by the New York Mets, who went 40-120. Chicago will need to go 13-25 just to avoid matching the Mets record for losses.

Outfielder Tommy Pham was traded from the White Sox to the St. Louis Cardinals at the trade deadline, so he was around for a lot of the losing. He revealed what was so frustrating with the team throughout the year.

“It’s unfortunate we blew so many leads because that changes what kind of reliever the other team brings in,” Pham said. “So many times my fourth at-bat was against the other team’s best instead of a guy they were going to bring in when trailing. I don’t blame anyone. It’s just frustrating for the hitters.”

Just a few years ago, the White Sox looked like one of the better young teams in baseball. However, the sudden demise of this organization shows how quickly things can change in this sport.

It’s been a nightmare-fueled season for the White Sox, so the end of the year can’t come soon enough for them.
