In Baralekha of Moulvibazar district, ordinary students and people held a human chain program on Sunday to demand the resignation of four Awami League and Jubo League leaders, accusing them of publicly obstructing the anti-discrimination student movement, ordering the police to shoot at the students, attacking them and accusing them of corruption. At the end of the human chain, they gave a memorandum to UNO and Baralekha upazila officer in charge.
Four Awami League and Jubo League leaders are – Mayor of Barlekha Municipality and Upazila Awami League Organizing Secretary Abul Imam Md. Kamran Chowdhury, Principal of Women's Education Academy Degree College and Joint General Secretary of Upazila Awami League AKM Helal Uddin, Lecturer of the same college Jubo League Leader Hasan Ahmad and District Jubo League Leader Sadar Union Chairman Saleh Ahmed Jewel.
In the memorandum, the students complained that the principal of the Women's Education Academy Degree College, AKM Helal Uddin, being the joint secretary of the Upazila Awami League, was illegally appointed as the principal through party influence and corruption. There are various allegations of corruption against him in various educational institutions including recruitment trade. He played a role in various ways to thwart the anti-discrimination student movement. On the other hand, the organizational secretary of the upazila Awami League Mayor Abul Imam Md. Kamran Chowdhury, Jubo League leader UP Chairman Saleh Ahmad Jewel, Lecturer Hasan Ahmad openly opposed the student mob agitation in the past days and stood against the just demands of the students. To protect the new freedom gained in exchange of many fresh lives in the ongoing student movement, the National Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Council is currently playing a role in repairing the state. These four Awami League leaders of Baralekha, who openly opposed the anti-discrimination student movement and attacked the protesting students with the police, should be removed from their posts quickly if they do not resign voluntarily.
Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Najratun Naeem said that the students of the anti-discrimination student movement have submitted a memorandum regarding the resignation of two public representatives and two teachers of Baralekha upazila and some other demands. Decisions in these matters will be taken in consultation with higher authorities.
