Post, Telecommunication, Information Technology and Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam commented that India has behaved inhumanely by opening the dam without prior warning.
He said this at the briefing after the advisory council meeting on Thursday.
Adviser Nahid Islam said, we can see the upstream water flowing into Bangladesh and causing this flood situation. The dam was opened without any advance warning and preparation. By this India has shown inhumanity and non-cooperation.
He said, we will call, we hope, India will soon withdraw from such anti-people policy of Bangladesh.
Urging the two countries to work together to protect their people from disasters, Nahid Islam said, we must find a fair solution on how the people of Bangladesh can protect the people of India from such natural disasters.
Emphasizing the good relations between the two countries, the advisor said that the students and people of Bangladesh are angry with India's policy. The people of Bangladesh have been agitating and speaking for a fair share of water for a long time. We hope that there is no tension in Bangladesh-India relations. Bangladesh-India relations should be replaced on the basis of fairness.
Calling on all the social and political forces and people of the country to work together to deal with the flood situation of the country, Nahid Islam said that we have to work together to deal with the flood situation of the country, just like the nation was united in the uprising.
He urged all public and private institutions to come forward to deal with the disaster. The advisor requested the businessmen to come forward from a humanitarian point of view.
Nahid Islam said that the government is trying to rescue the flood-affected people more efficiently with the help of the armed forces.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser on Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Ministry of Water Resources of Interim Government, Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser on Ministry of Youth and Sports and Ministry of Labor and Employment also spoke in the briefing.
The eastern region of Bangladesh has been hit by severe floods. Feni, Comilla, Chittagong, Khagrachari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and Brahmanbaria have reported two deaths so far. One of the two is from Feni and one from Brahmanbaria. So far, 4 lakh 40 thousand 840 families have been waterlogged in these 8 districts.
It has been alleged that such a situation has occurred in Bangladesh due to the opening of the Dambur hydropower project in the Indian state of Tripura. However, the Indian government says the floods in Bangladesh were not caused by the opening of the dam at the Dumbur hydroelectric project on the Gomtir river.
India's Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Thursday, 'Dumbur Dam opening upstream of Gomti River in Tripura has caused flooding in the eastern border districts of Bangladesh. We are concerned about spreading such news in Bangladesh. This is not correct. We would like to mention that the catchment area of Gomti river flowing through India and Bangladesh has received the highest rainfall of this year for the last few days. Flooding in Bangladesh is mainly due to water from this large catchment downstream of the dam.'
