The fear is true, the dam of Gomti has broken

Finally, the worst fears came true. Gomti river embankment in Comilla has broken due to strong water flow. A small part breaks and the flow of water enters the locality.

On Thursday (August 22) at around 1:30 am, a part of the dam in Burburia area of ​​Sholanal Union of Burichong Upazila of Comilla was breached. As a result of that erosion, water is freely entering the localities on the opposite side of the dam.

Abdul Latif, Supervising Engineer of Comilla Water Development Board (PUBO) confirmed this at night.

Locals said that a hole was formed in Gomti embankment in Burburia area on Thursday evening. Later, an army team came there and tried to close the hole. At that time the flow of water increased and water continued to enter the other side over the dam. Army personnel could not do it despite their best efforts to close the hole. Later everyone came back. As a result of the flow of water, the part of the dam collapsed at one stage.

Due to the breach of the dam, there is a risk of flooding from Burichong, Brahmanpara to Kasba in Brahmanbaria in the district. Already people of all areas including Buriburia, Gazipur are being repeatedly requested to move to shelters.
