This time the bank account of former BCB president Papon has been seized

Nazmul Hasan Papon has been in hiding ever since Hasina left the country after resigning in the face of the popular uprising. He was supposed to attend the BCB board meeting virtually last (Wednesday), but he was not present. Former cricketer Farooq Ahmed has been appointed BCB president instead. This ends the Papon chapter of BCB.

This time the bank account of this former BCB president has been seized. Apart from Papon, the bank accounts of the businesses owned by his wife Roksana Hossain and their children have been suspended. If they have any locker facilities, they will also be suspended.

On Thursday (August 22), Bangladesh Bank's Financial Intelligence Unit Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) sent a letter in this regard to the country's banks and financial institutions.

The letter states that if any account is maintained in the name of the said persons and their owned organizations, the transactions of that account shall be suspended for 30 days under section 23 (1) (c) of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2012 and the use of any locker in their name shall also be suspended for 30 days. Instructions are given to stop.

Nazmul Hasan Papon was directly associated with politics as he was the son of former President Zillur Rahman. He contested the by-elections of 2009 as a nominated candidate of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League in a vacant seat and became a member of Parliament for the first term.

Papon has been associated with Abahani Limited, one of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League teams, for almost a decade. From 2006 to 2008 served as the Acting President of Abahani's Cricket Committee. Apart from this, he was the president of the Beximco Cricket Team, the champion of the 2006 Corporate Cricket League. He chaired the advisory committee for the inaugural edition of the Bangladesh Premier League.

Papon took over as the BCB president on 17 October 2012 after AHM Mustafa Kamal. Since then, he has ruled the country's cricket with single-minded dominance. His third term in BCB will end this year. After going through various discussions and criticisms for 12 years, he got the responsibility of sports minister this year.

Papon has been the unwritten guardian of sports since before he became a minister. He used to solve many problems including hockey and football. However, with the fall of Sheikh Hasina, Papon's dominance in sports has ended.
