462 kilometers of roads in 12 districts including Feni, Comilla, Habiganj, Moulvibazar were damaged due to flood caused by torrential downpour and heavy rain.

This picture of the initial damage to the road network of Comilla, Sylhet and Chittagong zones in this flood that started on August 20 has emerged in the report of the Directorate of Roads and Public Ways.

In the recent floods, the information of roads, bridges, culverts damaged by various road departments of the Roads and Public Ways Department has been collected through the flood information center established in the road building. And it has been sent in the form of a report to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges.

It has been said that 111 roads in the three zones Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Feni, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachari road divisions have been damaged. The length of the damaged road is 462.21 km.

According to Roads and Highways, 90.63 kilometers of national highways, 52.88 kilometers of regional highways and 318.70 kilometers of district highways are among the affected roads.

According to the report, the roads have been submerged in water at various places due to floods caused by heavy rains and the water coming down from the upstream. Various roads were partially swept away by the flood water, road embankments collapsed. The surface of various roads has been damaged and potholes have been formed.

According to reports, a 10-km section of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Chouddagram is still under water. Due to landslides, communication is being disrupted on various mountain roads of Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Zikrul Hasan, Supervising Engineer of the Department's Maintenance Circle, said, “What has been found so far is preliminary information. Once the water recedes, a full picture of the damage will be available. This is a very preliminary report. Many places are still inaccessible due to floods.

“When the water recedes, we will send people, then the actual situation will be known. We are compiling the information from different districts and sending it to the ministry. And once the flood waters recede, we will start repairing the damaged roads.”
