10 lakh people are trapped in water due to flood in Comilla

About 1 million people of 14 upazilas have become waterlogged due to continuous rains and landslides in Comilla for several days. However, Burichong Upazila was the most affected. The entire Burichong upazila was flooded due to the collapse of the Gomti river dam. All the unions of the upazila are under water. About 2 lakh people are stuck in water.

Already, electricity and mobile communications have been cut off in some areas, due to which the Banvasi people have suffered. While several people have gone to shelters, many have been forced to take shelter under the open sky. Affected people are spending days waiting to return to their homes when the water in the river goes down.

Around 10,000 people have taken shelter in Burichong's temporary shelter till 11:00 on Saturday (August 24). All other people are under the open sky. 50,000 water trapped families are just waiting to return to the old situation when the flood is over.

Various flood-affected areas of Burichong Upazila have been visited, all around are filled with water. Fish pens, hectares of cropland, and cattle farms were submerged in the murky water. Houses are also under water. Some of the people who have taken refuge are swimming to see their homes.

A resident of Kharataia area named Ajmir Hossain said, I don't understand where so much water came from in a moment. I don't know what to do with the damage that has happened to us.

Meanwhile, Comilla's sky is sunny since Friday (August 23) morning. Even on Saturday morning, bright sunshine was seen across Comilla's sky. Even if there is no rain, the water is decreasing to a very low level.

According to Water Development Board (PUBO) sources, Gomti river water is flowing 97 cm above the boundary line since the dam was broken. 1 cm of water is receding every hour. Which is insufficient to normalize the flood situation.
