The start of the new NFL season isn’t too far away and teams are still putting themselves into places to succeed. This includes adding to the overall depth of their roster even with all the roster cuts expected to come down the line soon.

The Minnesota Vikings recently added to their team by signing a former college star running back. Minnesota agreed to terms with Mo Ibrahim, a former Golden Gophers star running back.

Insider Jordan Schultz originally broke the news of the story.

The deal is for one year and is worth $795,000. Insider Aaron Wilson had the contract terms on social media.

Ibrahim was one of the better running backs in the Big Ten, showing incredible power and burst for Minnesota. He is the program’s all-time leading rusher and is tenth in Big Ten history for rushing yards.

The former Golden Gopher spent five years with the program, having his coming out party in the 2020 season. He put up 1,076 yards and 15 touchdowns over seven games.

Unfortunately for Ibrahim, he suffered an Achilles injury in the 2021 season opener against Ohio State. Before the injury, he had posted 163 yards and two touchdowns against the Buckeyes.

After the injury, he bounced back in 2022 to continue where he left off. Ibrahim set single-season records for Minnesota in rushing attempts with 320, rushing yards with 1,665, and 20 rushing touchdowns.

He averaged 153.7 yards per game, but despite his success, he went undrafted in the NFL. He signed with the Detroit Lions and spent most of his rookie year on the practice squad.

Ibrahim has been plagued by injuries over the last few years. He was a free agent until he signed with Minnesota. The hope is that he can make the Vikings’ roster and prove his worth.

His lack of elite speed leaves some things to be desired on the field. However, he does have strong vision and contact balance that could help him become part of a depth chart.

He will need to compete with Ty Chandler, Kene Kwangwu, and C.J. Ham as the top backfield options in Minnesota. More likely, he will be on the practice squad but could always get his name called to join the Vikings at any time.
