UN human rights chief Volker Turk is coming to Dhaka on a significant visit. If everything goes well, he will visit Bangladesh in the second week of next month. Several responsible diplomatic sources confirmed this information in the media at night.
According to sources, Bangladesh is going to join the International Anti-Disappearance Convention before the International Anti-Disappearance Day on August 30. For the past 15 years, there has been an urge for Bangladesh to join the Anti-Disappearance Convention. But the Sheikh Hasina government continued to ignore it. Hasina's dictatorship ended in a bloody coup by students on August 5, and Nobel-winning economist Dr. The interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus decided to accede to the charter without any observations or conditions.
Observers say Bangladesh's participation in the Anti-Disappearance Convention and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker's visit to Dhaka are very important. It may be recalled that in the last 15 years, more than 700 people have faced the terrible experience of disappearance in Bangladesh. Although many have survived, more than 150 people are still missing.
The Anti-Disappearance Charter was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2006. Its implementation began in 2010 after 32 countries signed it. The Charter as a whole aims to end impunity for these crimes in addition to ending disappearances, establishing justice and providing assistance to victims. So far 75 countries of the world have joined this charter.
Bangladesh is a signatory to 8 of the 9 UN Human Rights Charters. But did not support the charter of disappearance. Taking responsibility in the changing situation, the interim government of Bangladesh wants to stop the culture of disappearance along with upholding human rights. The immediate decision to join the anti-disappearance charter is for this purpose. Professionals who are politically aware but not activist diplomats say the UN will play a role in holding the government or any of its institutions accountable for state-sponsored disappearances after signing the charter.
