Case against 167 A-League leaders and activists including former MP in Sakhipur

A case of beating has been filed in the police station in connection with the attack on the protest of anti-discrimination student movement in Tangail's Sakhipur. On Monday night, the convener of Municipal Chhatra Dal, Morshedul Islam, lodged the case in the Sakhipur police station.

In the case, the names of 167 Awami League leaders and workers including former member of parliament of Tangail-8 seat, Upazila Awami League general secretary Anupam Shahjahan Joy and former chairman of Upazila Parishad Principal Saeed Azads, Zulfiqar Haider Kamal and former mayor of the municipality Abu Hanif Azad have been mentioned. Apart from this, another 150 unidentified people have been accused.

According to the statement of the case, on August 3, in the anti-discrimination student movement, a procession came out from Soukhin Mor of the city to demand the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina government. The procession reached Taltala square of the city around 12 noon. At that time, the accused persons mentioned in the statement premeditatedly attacked the procession with weapons.

Several protesting students were seriously injured in the attack. After 23 days of this incident, a case was filed in Sakhipur police station. In addition to the former MP-upazila chairman and municipal mayor, the notable defendants in the case are former upazila parishad chairman Zulfikar Haider Kamal, upazila Awami League president Shaukat Shikdar, former zilla parishad members Anwar Hossain Talukder and Kibria Badal, upazila Awami League joint general secretary Sultan Sharif, UCCA Limited Chairman and Upazila Awami League Organizing Secretary KBM Ruhul Amin, Ghazaria Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Anwar Hossain, Bara Chona UP Chairman Azharul Islam, former UP Chairman Saiful Islam, Tariqul Islam, District Volunteer League Vice President Fazlul Haque, Upazila Volunteers League president Kamrul Hasan, former president of Upazila Chhatra League Arif Sarkar and Russell Al Mamun etc.

Sakhipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Shahinur Rahman said the case has been registered. Efforts are on to arrest the accused.
