There is a lot of relief, not everyone is getting it due to lack of coordination in distribution

Due to the continuous rains and the floods caused by the upstream water in Noakhali, the houses are submerged, the stoves are not burning in most of them. The suffering of the common people has reached extremes due to food crisis. Various organizations and individuals have come forward to provide relief to these water-bound people.

However, the Banvasis of Noakhali say that a huge amount of relief is coming, but not everyone is getting it due to 'mismanagement'. The middle class is having a hard time not being able to speak. Again, many have expressed anger that the assistance is not reaching the marginal areas.

A CNG driver said, “It is seen that I am poor, I can stand in front of someone and search. But another, there are people who belong to middle class families. He couldn't find it because of shame. The main problem is getting stuck in that place.”

The residents of Feni who are facing terrible floods are saying the same thing. When we inquired about the various areas there, the image of mismanagement in the relief distribution came up in the words of many.

According to them, some people always stand on the side of the road, some people bring something and give it to them. And there are those who have never received anything, because they cannot stand on the street, nor tell anyone.

A resident of the Kamua area of Feni Munsirhat said that many people are coming for relief, but the problem is that not everyone is getting it. Some have taken 10 times, some have not received even once. I don't need anything, the day goes on as Allah keeps me. But I want everyone who is affected to get help. The person who stands on the street and takes relief – he is damaged, and the house – is also damaged. This problem does not occur if people are aware of it.

Many are worried about the future due to the damage caused by the flood.

A businessman from Eklashpur area of Begumganj said, “I have given to Mainsher all my life, now no matter how hard I am, I will give it to you.” I am secretly buying rice and pulses from a family on Tuesday, the man is so happy. They can neither ask nor eat. But they are very lacking.

“No one in Dhaka knows who is in which condition. They are bringing and giving, good work. Look at this, people are getting it. But those who are rich in our society – they have gone to sleep. If I pull the water (when the water goes down) then they will come out.”

This businessman said, “Many have CNG. By driving CNG, he earns 1000 daily. Only 1000 would end daily. CNG is off for 10 days, how will they go?

“But everyone knows Heta has CNG. No one understands that he has no cash capital at all.”

Relief 'not reaching' marginal areas

Parashuram was first affected by the flood and the water started coming towards the city of Feni. When the residents of Parashuram needed relief assistance, a severe flood occurred in Feni. Even if the relief reached Parashuram within a few days, the people of the marginal areas did not get it.

Locals said that the people standing on the side of the road are getting help more than they need, and people far away are not getting anything.

Shahjahan of Kashinagar of Parashuram upazila said, “All the reliefs go here and there, we are people of Kashinagar and Champaknagar. I'm kind of fed up with the kids. Eat three meals once. I wandered from morning till noon; I got nothing.”

Shahabuddin Mia of Eklashpur village in Begumganj said, “I received a packet of mudri yesterday after 10 days of flooding. There is a market next to my house, I don't mind. However, there is no provision for cooking since the beginning of the flood. I'm at home, I'm going somewhere. Stay at home live or die.”

Shakhawat Hossain, a student of Choumuhani area who worked as a volunteer during the flood, said, “Little relief is going to the municipality. There are marginal places like Hajipur-Durgapur; In those places, relief is reaching less, people's attention is also less.”

A government official working in Feni said, “The administration could have arranged for a fair distribution of relief if it wanted. If the District Commissioner takes the initiative, it is not a matter of holding a list and giving relief through UNOs. Everyone would have brought relief, if the list had been handed down, this would not have happened.”
