Former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb shared words of wisdom for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

The Chicago Bears selected Williams as the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He is already the favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.
McNabb understands the pressure and position Williams is in since he was the second overall pick in the 1999 NFL draft.
The former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback gave his unsolicited advice to the rookie.

“The first thing that he has to do is he has to integrate himself into the playbook,” McNabb told John Robinson IV and Doug McKain of LA Sports Report. “And we can talk about the athletic ability, we can talk about the arm strength, we can talk about all the plays that he makes outside of the pocket. But if he doesn’t understand what the play call is and reading the defense and understanding his keys, then he’s not going to be successful.”
McNabb spent 11 seasons in Philadelphia and his jersey number was retired by the Eagles in 2013. The six-time Pro Bowler understands longevity with a franchise, which is exactly what the Bears envision for Williams.
The arrival of Williams has given the franchise a new chapter in its long history. The last two quarterbacks that have led the offense have been unsuccessful. Mitchell Trubisky and Justin Fields both failed to live up to expectations in Chicago, but the former Heisman winner gives the Bears an opportunity to potentially make a playoff run.
Williams has a slew of weapons to throw to including Keenan Allen and D’Andre Swift. His supporting cast puts the former Trojan in a prime position to have a stellar rookie season.
“I think for all young quarterbacks, they get rushed into the situation too early,” McNabb said. “Now he’s in a perfect situation with all the talent around him, but yet still he has to understand what’s expected of him in that office.”
A number of former NFL players have echoed McNabb’s statements. Tom Brady has also spoken about the benefits of sitting under a starting quarterback for the first couple of years in the NFL.
Rookie quarterbacks are now expected to lead a professional offense with no experience playing in the league.
Fans only have to wait one more week to witness Williams in his NFL debut on Sept. 8 when the Bears take on the Tennessee Titans.
