In Ashulia of Savar, at least 60 garment factories have been declared closed in the face of labor agitation. However, no major disturbances were reported anywhere. After the announcement of the holiday, the workers of some factories made some ruckus. Law and order forces calmed them down.
Talking to the industrial police and local people, it is known that the workers of various factories in Jirabo area from Bypile of Bypile-Abdullahpur road of Ashulia joined the work at the scheduled time on Wednesday morning. At around 8:30 am, the workers of the closed factories protested in front of the various factories that were in operation. They threw brickbats at the factory. Job aspirants also joined the angry workers. Later the factory authorities were forced to declare the factories a holiday.
The angry workers later staged protests at different places on the road. Members of the army and industrial police explained them and removed them from the road.
The workers said that the workers have been protesting for several days in various garment factories. The owners accepted some of their demands yesterday. But now they are saying that it is not possible for them to accept all the demands. The workers of various factories got excited and protested in front of the factory and on the road.
An eyewitness tea shopkeeper near the factory of Ha-Meem Group in Narsinghpur area told the media that work was going on in the factory since morning. Later, when people protested in front of the factory for jobs, the factory gave them leave.
Ismail Hossain, managing director of Sharmin Group, said that after the work started in the factory in the morning, some people vandalized two minibuses carrying staff outside the factory. In such circumstances, vandalism usually occurs in the factory. For the sake of safety, therefore, the workers of the factory have been given leave.
Ashulia Shilpa Police-1 Superintendent of Police Sarwar Alam said, workers joined work in the morning. After a major garment strike, thousands of garment workers took to the streets. At least 60 other garment factories then declared a general holiday. No major disturbances have been reported anywhere so far.
The Superintendent of Police said, the factory authorities accepted some demands of the workers before us and the army. Now they are saying that they cannot accept the demands of the workers. The workers became agitated. However, this officer of the Industrial Police said that they have been removed from the road.
