Paul George Calls Out Anthony Edwards for Claim About 1990s All-Stars

Philadelphia 76ers star forward Paul George didn’t hold back in his latest episode of his Podcast P show.

George took issue with Minnesota Timberwolves star guard Anthony Edwards’s criticism of the state of the NBA, particularly 1990s basketball at the height of the Michael Jordan era.

George didn’t mince any words when it came to Edwards’ comments.

“I get what he was trying to say,” George said. “But I don’t get what he was trying to say.”

The nine-time All-Star added that Edwards’ opinion was “kind of disrespectful to the game” and “a very immature comment.”

In an interview with the Wall Street ’s Lane Florsheim, Edwards said he thought Jordan was the only skilled player during his era.

“I didn’t watch it back in the day so I can’t speak on it,” Edwards said. “They say it was tougher back then than it is now, but I don’t think anybody had skill back then. [Michael Jordan] was the only one that really had skill, you know what I mean?”

NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson took offense to that as well and shared his thoughts on Edwards’ comments.

“I never respond to a guy that’s never won a championship,” Johnson said. “There’s not nothing to really say. He didn’t win a college championship. I don’t even know if he won a high school championship.”

The debate about modern basketball versus a much older style of basketball has been ongoing for some time now. Many former players, such as current Lakers head coach JJ Redick, have discussed this topic.

Before Redick became the Lakers’ coach, he commented on Hall of Famer Bob Cousy about competing against “plumbers and firemen” in the 1950s and ’60s. Hall of Famer Jerry West didn’t like what Redick said, responding, “I just think it’s very disrespectful.”

The game has undoubtedly changed dramatically over the past several decades, but there’s no need to disrespect and diminish what past greats did in their era.

What George wants Edwards to understand is that, even though he might believe one era is inferior to another, it’s not a smart thing to say coming from a young and rising star. On top of that, it’s not a great look to have someone like Edwards who is making their mark in the league the past generation helped build up.

A lot has changed in the game of basketball, but one thing is for sure: many of the all-time greats in the past can indeed hold their own in any era.
