Smith initially signed a minor league deal with the Yankees in January. He then opted out of the deal in March after failing to make the Opening Day roster. He re-signed with the Yankees on a minor league deal shortly thereafter.

In 45 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, Smith slashed .255/.333/.448 with eight home runs, 28 runs batted in and an OPS of .782.
He was especially dominant in the month of May, slashing .317/.389/.622 with seven home runs. After that strong month, he’s elected to search for major league opportunities.
