The operation has begun by disconnecting electricity as part of the illegal establishment of the Gomati river in Burichang upazila of Comilla. The raid was conducted on Wednesday (July 7) from 8pm to 5pm in the Baburbazar and Kamarkhara area of the upazila on Wednesday (July 7).
Burichang Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Tanvir Hossain led the operation. A group of Burichang Police Station, sub -divisional engineer of the Water Development Board, Eman Barua, Deputy Engineer Saiful Islam, Affairs Assistant Nasir Uddin and Rural Electricity Department officials and activists assisted in the operation.
In the first phase, electricity was disconnected in Baburbazar area and 12 of Kamarakhara area. All these structures were shops and settlements, which have long been occupied by two banks of the river and the embankments.
UNO Md. Tanvir Hossain said the normal flow of the Gomati river was being disrupted due to these illegal establishments and the waterlogging was intensifying during the monsoon season. In addition to endangering the environment, these structures, which are illegally occupied by government land, have become a threat to rivers and embankments.
According to the district administration, such operations will continue to protect the river and the environment. After the electricity isolated, each occupier has been given two days to remove the establishment in their own initiative. Then the illegal structures will be removed and the embankment will be completely occupied.
Although this initiative of the administration is appreciated in the area, many want this program not to be confined to the expedition but permanently implemented.
