Tanks, Bombs and Terror: The Lost Childhood of Gaza's Children

As a result of Israeli attacks on children in Gaza, the rate of psychological and physical damage has increased at an alarming rate. According to a report published by Al-Jazeera, more than 80 percent of children in Gaza are victims of severe trauma.

The report highlights the personal experiences of children. According to 15-year-old Abed al-Aziz, tanks rolled past his house and he saw family members injured or killed. He is currently suffering from various physical ailments including high blood pressure, kidney problems.

8-year-old Lana Al-Sharif also suffered horrific emotional trauma after her home was destroyed in a bomb attack. He has developed vitiligo and panics at the sound of every explosion.

Therapist Sabreen Abu Rahman said that children not only suffer from mental trauma, but also physical problems such as headache, stomach ache, bone pain, hair loss and weak immune system.

According to UNICEF estimates, about 64,000 children in Gaza have been injured or killed, and about a million children are trying to survive the dire conditions of the war every day.

The report warns that, even if war ends or permanent peace comes, the impact of trauma on children will be long-lasting. Urges for rebuilding Gaza's health and education systems, emotional support and international aid have been reiterated.
