1 crore 26 lakh taka has been spent on the election. I will take that money. I will do this injustice. I will do so much irregularity.'
In the 12th National Assembly election, independent Member of Parliament (Lalpur-Bagatipara) Natore-1 Constituency MP Abul Kalam Azad's statement regarding election expenses has caused a storm of criticism on social media.
He said these things at a function organized by Lalpur Upazila Administration on the occasion of Great Independence Day (March 26). The next day, the video of his speech went viral on social media.
On the other hand, conscious circles feel that such a public statement of a member of parliament in an upazila administration function is unfortunate and will encourage corruption. On the other hand, Lalpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sharmin Akhtar, who was present at the event, was also embarrassed by saying such a thing in front of everyone.
In the event, Abul Kalam Azad also said that I have deposited Tk. 25 lakhs in the bank. I bought a tax free car for 27 lakhs. If I wanted, I could buy a car for one crore rupees. But since I don't have money, I bought it for 27 lakhs. Now I will buy it, I will buy it with that money. I will take that money. I won't do anything about it. I will withdraw this one crore 26 lakh taka.
Former principal Abdur Razzak, president of Natore district branch of Anti-Corruption Committee, said, “It is very unfortunate if a member of parliament declares corruption in a public event.”
Lalpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sharmin Akhtar said, “I don't know how the MP said such a thing in front of everyone.” I myself am embarrassed by such words.
In this regard, Member of Parliament Abul Kalam Azad said, it is nothing like that. I said it jokingly while giving a speech. It's not serious. Don't take it seriously.
Incidentally, independent candidate (Eagle) Advocate Abul Kalam Azad was elected in Natore-1 (Lalpur-Bagatipara) constituency by getting 77 thousand 943 votes. His closest candidate Shahidul Islam Bakul got 75 thousand 947 votes. Before this, he was elected as a member of parliament from this constituency in 2014 on the nomination of Awami League. He is the younger brother of former Member of Parliament Mumtaz Uddin.
