Suffering with internet may continue for another month

For the past few days, users are suffering from slow internet speed across the country. The submarine cable (C-MI-5) under the sea is facing such problems as the repair work is not completed.

Saidur Rahman, General Manager (Operation and Maintenance) of Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC) said on Tuesday that the C-MI-5 cable was cut in the sea area of Indonesia last Friday midnight.

The company said it may take up to the last week of May to complete the repair of the cable.

Their administrative work there takes a little more time. All in all, they said, the work can be done by the third or fourth week of next month.

When drawing attention to the problem of slow internet speed, Saidur Rahman said that all the options have not been fully implemented yet. The country's first submarine cable C-MI-U-4 has the capability to carry full bandwidth. For this, the concerned company will have to pay extra. But it has not yet been implemented. There are other options. They are in progress.

Internet bandwidth across the country comes mainly through two submarine cables running through the deep sea. Bangladesh's first submarine cable C-MI-4 landing station at Cox's Bazar. And the second submarine only C-MI-5 entered through Kuakata.

A BSCPLC press release on Saturday said the second submarine cable suddenly severed 440 km west of Singapore at 12 pm on Friday.

All Kuakata-Singapore-bound traffic through that cable is currently closed. The cable is being repaired and quickly re-connected by the C-MI-5 consortium.

According to the press release, although the service through that cable has been stopped, the Internet service is currently running in the country through C-MI-4 submarine cable and ITC companies.

A significant amount of the bandwidth of the decommissioned Mi-Wi-5 is being shifted to Mi-Wi-4 cables. Internet speed may be slow until the C-MI-5 submarine cable is repaired and relaunched.
