Designer and aerodynamicist Adrian Newey is on the brink of joining the Aston Martin Formula 1 team on a lucrative five-year contract. The deal, reportedly worth up to £30 million per year including bonuses and add-ons, marks a significant move in Aston Martin’s ambitious quest to become world championship contenders.
Newey has negotiated his release from Red Bull, where he played a pivotal role in their dominance, and is expected to commence his new role in early March, well ahead of the design work for Aston Martin’s 2026 car.
A news conference at Aston Martin’s F1 base in Silverstone is scheduled for Tuesday, where the formal announcement of Newey’s appointment is anticipated.
A spokesperson for Aston Martin said:

“Adrian has been linked to many teams and would be an asset to any team, but we don’t have anything to announce.”
Despite the official silence, inside sources confirm that the stars are aligning for this move, highlighting Aston Martin’s substantial investments under the ownership of Lawrence Stroll.
Newey, celebrated for his ability to provide teams with a competitive edge during regulatory changes, boasts an impressive résumé with teams like Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull. His arrival at Aston Martin is part of a broader strategy encompassing new facilities, such as a factory and wind tunnel, and a technical partnership with Honda from 2026.
Newey is arguably the most influential designer in Formula 1 history, with 12 drivers’ championships and 13 constructors’ titles to his name. His addition to the Silverstone-based team promises substantial improvements in both aerodynamic and mechanical aspects of the car design, crucial for the 2026 season and beyond.
While his early commencement is strategically timed to comply with the change in F1 regulations, which prohibit aerodynamic design work for 2026 before the preceding year, it allows him to lay the essential groundwork that will steer the team’s developmental trajectory.
The forthcoming seasons promise a compelling narrative with Red Bull expected to struggle for the remainder of this season and potentially beyond. This therefore marks a period of heightened competition and reshaped dynamics on the grid. With more announcements expected and the unfolding of these strategies, this could be an exciting week for those who are fans of the Stroll-owned team, and of course, their number one driver Fernando Alonso.
